In operations at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, as well as Ondo, Edo, Kano, Kaduna, Plateau, and other courier businesses, NDLEA agents intercepted almost 2,060 kg of various substances, including heroin, methamphetamine, cannabis, tramadol, and rohypnol.

In a statement released on Sunday, October 24, the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, stated a woman was caught while attempting to smuggle skunk wrapped in akpu wraps into an NDLEA cell for a suspect in prison.

“In a most audacious move, a nursing mother, 35-year-old Mariam Drissu was arrested at the Edo state Command headquarters of the Agency on Thursday 21st October while trying to smuggle drugs into the cell for a suspect in custody. Officers on duty had while searching the food brought by Mariam for her relation in custody discovered two cups of “Loud" cannabis weighing 13grams buried inside the food (akpu) meant for the suspect in custody." the statement read. 

Two consignments of heroin weighing 4.40kg and 550grams were intercepted on October 6 and 15 respectively at the cargo shed of the MMIA, Ikeja.

The first was detected within bags of granulated sugar and flour being transported from Johannesburg, South Africa to Lagos on an Ethiopian Airlines flight when it was discovered at the airport’s SAHCO import facility.

Two suspects were arrested for further investigation: Chukwuemeka Ugochukwu, a freight agent who cleared the consignment, and Kabiru Aminu, a stock keeper who was to collect the package for further distribution to recipients. On the 9th of October, one Adeoya Segun Joy, who was supposed to pick up the suitcase from Kabiru Aminu, was apprehended in Ajao estate, while Enahoro Emmanuel Annointing, who was also supposed to pick up the shipment, was apprehended in the Abuleegba area Lagos’s area. Both were following orders from their South African allies.

The second shipment, discovered in walls of ten containers laced with tailoring materials at the SAHCO export shed, was destined for Malaysia via Addis Ababa on Ethiopian cargo airline, while a freight forwarding agent, Ekpe Samson Victor, was arrested in connection with the unlawful export.

NDLEA officers prevented an attempt by another freight agency, Igwe Okoye Onwukwe, to export two consignments of cannabis to the United Kingdom.

On October 15, Igwe Okoye Onwukwe submitted a carton containing 16.55kg cannabis for export to the United Kingdom at the NAHCO export shed, where he was quickly detained.

Surprisingly, Onwukwe was located as the owner of another cargo of 15.85kg cannabis bound for the UK that was confiscated on the 20th of October, despite the fact that he was still being investigated in detention.

When operatives stormed a warehouse in Emure forest, Owo LGA on Friday 22nd October, two people, Uchenna Obodo Ali, 22, and Tochukwu Eno, 20, were apprehended with 302kg of cannabis.

Mohammed Haruna, 45, was detained in Kano with 10,161 sachets of Tramadol and Rohypnol tablets and capsules while transporting them on a bus for distribution.

Abiodun Ademoya, a suspected fake soldier from Akure south in Ondo state, was caught in Zaria with 11.6 kg of cannabis.

operatives from the Agency’s Directorate of Operation and General Investigations, DOGI, intercepted over 4.5 kilograms of methamphetamine concealed in palm fruit tins, artwork, bottles of cashew nuts, auto spare parts, and picture frames bound for Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and Qatar at some courier companies in Lagos.

Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, praised the officers and men of the MMIA, Ondo, Edo, Kano, Kaduna, and Plateau Commands, as well as DOGI, for their tenacity and resilience, and urged them and others across the country to keep their eyes on the goal until all drug cartels in the country are completely dismantled.
