Muyiwa Awoniyi, the manager of popular Nigerian singer Tems, is facing backlash after making controversial comments.

Many fans perceive them as dismissive and disrespectful towards the artist’s fans and audience.

In a recent statement, Awoniyi said: “Please understand. We are not here to entertain you, you just happen to be entertained. With or without your opinions, you will sit down and watch what happens when a perfect God uses imperfect humans.”

Many fans and commentators have taken issue with Awoniyi’s remarks. They feel undermines the importance of the audience and the artist-fan relationship. Some have accused Awoniyi of having an arrogant and entitled attitude, while others have defended him. Those in defence argue that he was simply stating that Tems’ artistry transcends the need for audience approval.

Tems herself has not directly addressed the controversy, but her social media pages have been flooded with comments from fans expressing their disappointment and disagreement with her manager’s statement. Some have even called for a boycott of Tems’ music until Awoniyi apologizes or is replaced.
