Chol Nyang, a model from the Kakuma refugee camp, has emerged as the winner of the 2024 Africa’s Next Super Model Competition held in Nairobi, Kenya.
Aside from being crowned as the runway queen and star girl of African fashion, Chol Nyang also bagged a cash prize of $ 5,000, among other goodies.
This year’s edition of Africa’s Next Super Model Competition held at the Broadwalk Mall was keenly contested by 17 talented models from across the continent. And Chol, a model from the Kakuma refugee camp, showed the stuff she is made of and outdid them, showcasing her unique charm and prowess in her game.
With Chol’s victory, she, alongside Magdalene Takanyiro – one of the top five finalists, has qualified to be in Milan for another top modelling competition in February 2025.
Speaking at the event, Timothy Owase, CEO of the Kenya Film Commission— delivered a message on behalf of Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports.
In his speech, Murkomen pledged his support for the modelling sub-sector to enable them to realise their potential and monetise their talents. “We believe in fostering an environment where creatives in Kenya and across Africa can turn their talents into careers, their passions into livelihoods and their dreams into global successes.”
Also in attendance was Dr Ezekiel Mutua, CEO of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya, who praised the platform’s growth and impact on the creative economy, noting the event’s development since its debut.
The Africa’s Next Super Model Competition is an annual event. The 2024 edition is the second time it has been held, while the maiden event, which saw Achol Khan emerge as Kenya’s inaugural Africa’s Next Super Model, took place in October 2023.
Joan Okorodudu, CEO of Isis Models and the founder of Africa’s Next Super Model announced that Nairobi would play a central role in her vision for making the country a global fashion hub.
Okorodudu also confirmed that top models from Africa’s Next Super Model have moved up to bigger opportunities on the global stage after signing huge contracts with international modelling agencies in Paris, New York, and London.
“Isis Models Africa has played a key role since its inception in empowering young African talents and providing them with a platform on the international stage featuring in global fashion events in major cities such as Madrid, Paris,and Milan,” she said.
