Former US President Donald Trump has called former US Secretary of State Gen. Colin Powell a traitor who “made plenty of mistakes" in his death.

Despite being completely vaccinated, Powell, 84, died on Monday from COVID-19 complications. He suffered from multiple myeloma, a blood plasma malignancy that can weaken the immune system, leaving him exposed to the virus.

Powell, a lifetime Republican, enraged Trump by endorsing Democrats in recent presidential races as the Republican Party moved dramatically to the right. Trump, according to the retired statesman, is unfit for the White House.

Powell’s death was exploited by Trump in a message to remind supporters that the general was a key architect of the horrific US war in Iraq, which Trump passionately opposed.

Powell confirmed his erroneous assertions regarding Saddam Hussein’s weapons programs years after the war, calling it a “blot" on his career.

Despite Democrats and Republicans, as well as Trump’s deputy Mike Pence, all praising the soldier and diplomat, Trump attacked Powell on Tuesday as a “typical RINO," or Republican in name only, “if even that."

“He was….always the first to attack other Republicans,” Trump said in an email message. “He made plenty of mistakes, but anyway, may he rest in peace!”

He cynically remarked that it was “great" to see the media admire Powell despite his gaffes, particularly his tumultuous involvement in the start of the second Iraq war.

“Hope that happens to me someday, Powell… made big mistakes on Iraq and famously, so-called weapons of mass destruction,” Trump wrote.
