The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has said no meaningful development can take place in the country without constant electricity.

Adelabu said power remains the bedrock for development, stressing the need to address the challenges affecting the sector.

He stated this in a meeting with a delegation of the African French Development, led by Mr Diarra Juliato Fellez, on Monday.

Represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mahmuda Mamman, Adelabu stressed that there are lots of factors challenging Nigeria’s power sector. He, however, stated that effective support and collaboration would help to guarantee constant electricity.

Diarra in his speech said through financial support, technical expertise and collaboration with Nigeria stakeholders, AFD aims to foster a power sector transformation that aligns with Nigeria’s nationally determined contribution.

He noted that the AFD envisions a power sector that is a catalyst for Nigeria’s decarbonization journey by 2030 which includes, “achieving a significant increase in the share of renewables in Nigeria’s power mix; ensuring universal access to electricity powered predominantly by clean energy and establishing a modernized, efficient and resilient grid capable of integrating renewable energy.”

He further stated that the key objectives are being identified as strategies that would position Nigeria as a regional leader in sustainable energy development while supporting its economic growth and environmental sustainability goals.

He added that African French Development‘s work aligns with its roles in the power sector, which include, “promoting renewable energy development, energy efficiency and grid modernization, strengthening of policy framework, capacity building and technology transfer and financing green energy project.”
