The President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, has debunked reports that the body is considering France women’s national team coach, Herve Renard for the Super Eagles job.
Recently, reports went viral claiming that the NFF has contacted Herve Renard over the Super Eagles of Nigeria coaching job, which has been vacant since coach Finidi George resigned in June.
Reports claimed that Renard was one of the coaches the NFF technical committee recommended to the body for the job due to his experience and success in African football.
Recall that the French tactician is the first and only coach to lead two different African countries to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He led Zambia to win the prestigious tournament in 2012 and repeated the feat with Ivory Coast in 2015.
Herve Renard who is expected to lead France’s women’s team to the 2024 Olympic Games, which will kick off later this month, made himself available for other teams after he announced that he would step down from his current role after the Olympics.
Since he made this announcement, a series of teams have been said to be hunting for his signature, including the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Egypt, the United States of America, and a host of others.
But the NFF president told the Punch that he is not aware that the federation is considering the Frenchman for the Super Eagles job.
“I am not aware of that for now,” the NFF president was quoted as saying.
On the report that Herve Renard is asking for ₦253 million per month salary for the Super Eagles job, Ibrahim Gusau said: “Did you see it from any NFF communication channel? It is from some of those that are always trying to create confusion.”
At the time of writing, the NFF was yet to decide on who would be the new coach of the Super Eagles two months away from the commencement of 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
