A newborn baby girl miraculously survived after being packed in a suitcase by her mother and buried in a shallow grave in a yard in Tsomo, South Africa,
Lindiswa Ntalo, a 34-year-old mother who was detained last week, appeared in court on Monday, October 18 and was given bail.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu, a woman from Tsomo’s Xolobe Administrative Area allegedly gave birth to a baby girl in the early hours of Monday morning, 11 October 2021.
The baby was allegedly placed in a suitcase and buried in a shallow grave in the yard, according to Naidu.
The Chief of the area, according to Naidu, contacted police in Tsomo on Tuesday about his suspicions that the woman was pregnant and is no longer pregnant, and that there is no child.
When police arrived in Xolobe, they discovered a grave in the yard. The baby was located under blankets in the bag, still alive," he stated, adding that the child was rushed to the hospital. The woman was arrested for concealing her pregnancy and was sent to the hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, after learning that Ntalo had not been prosecuted with attempted murder, community leaders expressed their outrage.
“This is awful," said Nkosi JongisizweNgcongolo, the leader of the Amazizi traditional council, who reported the crime on October 12. This is the same mom who buried her baby alive for 24 hours and attempted an abortion multiple times."
“She told the community and her relatives that she wanted to get rid of the pregnancy and the baby. Is this not making a mockery of justice? How can the police and NPA explain that? Why are they not charging her for attempted murder? We are disappointed. The baby could have died. It is a miracle that she was found alive." he added.
Despite the fact that the incident sparked widespread outrage, no family members were present when the mother appeared in court on Monday in Tsomo.
He accused said she cared for eight children, from her 18year-old eldest daughter to an 18-month-old grandchild.
