On Tuesday morning, a man allegedly attempted to jump from a telecommunications mast in the Iyana-Ipaja region of Lagos State.
Daniel Chibuike Bassi was recognized as the man who climbed to the top of the pole at 8.30 a.m. but was rescued by a combined team of police officers, officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and those from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
He is suspected of being mentally ill, and eyewitnesses said he was transported to the Gowon Estate Police Station for questioning.
Ibrahim Farinloye, NEMA’s South-West Co-ordinator, verified the event and added that preliminary inquiry revealed that the man climbed the pole likely to commit suicide.

However, he was persuaded to come down from the 200-foot pole by operatives from both the federal and state governments. Farinloye further revealed that the man works at Aluminium Village as an aluminium technician. He, on the other hand, resides in Dopemu, Lagos.
He was alleged to have approached individuals in the area before climbing the pole and informed them that he wanted to conduct a fellowship.
According to Farinloye, “He was taken to Gowon Estate Police Station, Lagos. In an interactive discussion with NEMA, LASEMA and Police, Mr Bassi seems to be incoherent and could not make a complete statement all along."
“NEMA had to appeal to the Police to leave the distressed man to settle down and calm down because he could not remember his age. He told us that he arrived at the scene at about 8am and started climbing the mast at 8.30am.
“He revealed that he never knew the area before but something pushed him to go to the scene. He was said to have called people around the scene and informed the people that he wanted to do a fellowship and started with songs and praising."
