Beppe Marotta, the CEO of Inter Milan, has alleged that Romelu Lukaku only joined Chelsea for the money after leaving the Italian club.
Lukaku scored 24 goals to lead Inter to their first Serie A title in 11 years last season, but he moved for Chelsea in August for a club-record £97.5 million.
According to sources, Lukaku is Chelsea’s highest-paid player, making £450,000 per week plus bonuses, dwarfing the club’s second-highest earner, N’golo Kante, who earns £290,000.
It’s a significant raise above Lukaku’s previous salary of £142,000 per week at San Siro.
The enormous raise, according to Inter boss Marotta, was the reason Lukaku departed the Italian champions to return to Stamford Bridge.
‘Lukaku left to raise his income,’ Marotta told Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera. ‘These figures can’t exist in Italy.’
While Inter made a profit on Lukaku, their financial problems prevented them from reinvesting the money in the team.
They found a great alternative for the Belgian in Edin Dzeko, who arrived on a free transfer from Roma, according to Marotta.
‘Lukaku was sold for €115 million, and we got Dzeko for nothing.’ There isn’t much of a difference on the field,’ Marotta added.
