Rauf Aregbesola, the Minister of Interior, has revealed that a big group of heavily armed gunmen attacked the Abolongo Custodial Centre in Oyo State on Friday, October 22.

Aregbesola said the armed squad unit members of the Nigerian Correctional Service and other security agencies on guard at the facility engaged the attackers in a gun duel that lasted 20 minutes before they were overpowered after the attackers used grenades and other explosives to gain access into the awaiting trial section of the facility and set free many of the awaiting trial inmates, according to a statement released by his media aide, Sola Fasure. Other areas of the facilities remained unaffected.

According to Aregbesola, security authorities are on the lookout for the fugitives, and a joint security services manhunt has been begun right away to apprehend the offenders.

He confirmed that some of the fugitives had been apprehended, while others had voluntarily returned. The Minister urged people on the run to surrender because escaping from lawful custody is a severe crime.
