Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) has urged the media to focus on the tone, content, and standards of reporting on security and safety measures.
Buhari said the term “growing insecurity" should be replaced with the “fact of reducing insecurity" in a statement signed by Garba Shehu, the President’s Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity.
‘President Buhari Felicitates With Muslims On Eid-el-Maulud, Reassures That Significant Gains Are Being Made In Combating Insecurity,’ according to the statement.
It partly read, “The President urges Muslims to strive for “forgiveness and closeness to the noble life and teachings of the Prophet (SAW) whose birthday is being marked on this blessed day. On this auspicious occasion, I wish you all the blessings of today.
“The President takes advantage of the opportunity to provide an overview of the expanded actions that the Armed Forces, Police Force, and intelligence agencies have undertaken to successfully respond to the nation’s security issues.
“He says the government expects and intends for these trends to continue, and he urges the media to change the tone, content, and standards of reporting on security and safety measures." It’s time to replace the terms “growing insecurity" and “declining insecurity" in the prefixes.
“Increased citizen participation and collaboration, together with rejuvenated, dynamic, and energized police, security, and military leadership, is assisting the administration in scoring additional triumphs against terrorism, criminality, and economic sabotage," the President says. The erroneous narrative of rising insecurity in the country should be replaced with the reality of reduced insecurity."
Shehu quoted Buhari as saying, “While there is work to do, the men and women in uniform who are helping the nation to achieve this goal, desire our collective appreciation and encouragement to do even more. The whole country and its mass communications systems have a duty in this regard.”
The President closed his speech by urging drivers to exercise caution and prevent unnecessary accidents.
