A cab driver has revealed what he believes is a scheme to catch unwitting drivers breaking the laws by luring them in with a stranded passenger.

He claimed he was near Ikeja’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport when he decided to use his ride-hailing app to see if he could acquire a passenger.

When a request came in, he realized the customer’s position was potentially unsafe, so he parked his car in the airport car park and went to investigate.

Instead of waiting inside the airport like other passengers, the customer is observed standing by the side of the road with his luggage.

A towing vehicle and some men in mufti are standing about on the other side of the road.

The driver claimed he recognized then that the customer wasn’t real and had been set up as bait so that if a cab came to pick him up down the road, the towing truck’s men would swoop in and arrest him for stopping in the incorrect place.

The driver claimed that he contacted the fake customer and slammed him, but that the customer said nothing in his defense and simply hung up.

He warned his fellow drivers about the ruse and advised them to stay away from bogus customers who were employed as bait to get them in trouble with the law.
