Lionel Messi, Barcelona’s greatest player, has received his first red card in a Barcelona shirt. The Argentine was sent off in the 120th minute after striking Athletic Bilbao forward, Asier Villalibre, in a super cup final.

Lionel Messi, whose involvement throughout the game was terrific was again charging towards Athletic Bilbao’s defense when he committed the foul. After successfully dribbling past Asier and laying a pass, the opposition player still tried the number 10 man, who struck the player in the head angrily.

VAR had to check the foul for a minute before Jesús Gil Manzano issued Messi a red card.

Messi has gone over 700 games for Barcelona without a red card. On the international scene, he has managed only two, making him one of football’s gentlemen.

Messi is likely to miss at least 4 games because of this red card. This is coming after missing some games due to injuries.

Messi isn’t having his best season. The Argentine’s form seemed to have dropped, however, he is sitting on top of the highest goalscorer La Liga chart.
